BraidsHair branding is fairly new in the area of cosmetology, but as the world of beauty grows and changes, braids are becoming a specialty in hair salons in Arden, NC. Braids are known as a protective style that keeps the ends of the hair tucked away and minimizes the need to style.

This type of styling gives the ends of the hair a break and protection from different weather conditions. Protective styles have been worn in media for at least three decades; however, the box braids and several other braided styles originated in Africa as far back as 3500 B.C.

Since then, braids have been worn, twisted into elaborate designs, curled styles, and twisted into ponytails. If you are thinking about having your hair braided, pre-treating your locks is of utmost importance.

How to Prepare Your Hair for Braids

1. Moisturize

If your hair is dry, breaks easily, and has a hard time staying moisturized, it’s important to prepare your hair before washing. First, section your hair into several equal sections and detangle each section using a water-based detangling product.

After carefully and gently detangling your hair, apply coconut oil from the scalp to the tip. Allow the oil to penetrate your hair for a few hours before you wash your hair.

This method is provided to strengthen and revitalize your hair and prevent dry, flaky scalp. If your ends are split or damaged, trim your hair before installing braids to prevent added damage.

2. Cleanse Your Hair

Next, give your scalp a gentle scrub using sulfate-free shampoo. This helps to remove all the first and any residue that might be left in your hair. Your scalp will be left feeling fresh and clean for braids.

After you wash your hair, use apple cider vinegar to close your cuticles and keep moisture locked in.

3. Deep Condition Your Hair

After you cleanse your hair, deep condition your crown. Allow the conditioner to sit in your hair for about 20 to 30 minutes before rinsing it out with cold water.

You can also sit under a dryer to give your hair strands extra slip and aid the brain installation.

4. Detangle Your Hair

Some of the pain you could experience is during the hair braiding process caused by tangled hair. Therefore, it’s important to thoroughly detangle before all braided hairstyles are done. For braids, you should use a medium tooth comb and detangle your hair from the tip, and work your way to the roots.

Use a blow-dryer and detangling spray to aid with the detangling process.

5. Go Get Your Braids

Lastly, you find a good stylist to install your braids. Make sure you use someone you can trust to care for your hair and someone who is experienced with braided hairstyles that aren’t heavy-handed or braid too tightly.

With good installations and proper maintenance, your braided hair will last up to 8 weeks.
